Updating Communications Standards During COVID-19

What I did

Project

  • Role: Writer, Content Strategist

  • Surfaces: Google for Developers brand guidelines

  • Company: Google for Developers

  • Year: 2020

Problem

Google wanted to develop a company-wide framework for managing communications during COVID-19. Various teams had begun authoring guidelines, but they were happening separately.

Solution

  • As a brand writer, I was tasked with partnering across the organization to develop guidance for Developer Marketing.

  • I created a working group to review all current guidance, then worked to develop messaging and examples that made sense for our organization.

  • With the help of my manager, I was able to get sign off by various groups we partnered with along with senior leadership.

Results

  • Pending!

In a moment of crisis, several teams came together to develop communication standards. I led the call.

I partnered with Brand Studio, Google’s UX organization, and Developer Marketing to set the standard for crisis communications around COVID-19 while providing concrete examples. Overall, we needed to downplay our regular excitement in order to acknowledge that things were difficult for people.
