When you’re scaling and expanding into a new market while evolving your voice, it’s time to revisit the basics.

What I did

Sauce Labs’ brand book

  • Role: Writer, Editor

  • Company: Sauce Labs

  • Year: 2014

Problem

Sauce Labs previously catered to startups, but wanted to expand into the enterprise market. Its voice had generally been casual, but it needed to grow up and be a little more polished. At the same time, it had been too small to bother with a brand book and it didn’t need one–until now. With new funding and a new goal in mind, it was time to update and codify some guidelines; a necessary step that comes with scaling.

Solution

  • Partnered with the brand lead and marketing director in the research and development to truly understand our market, personas, goals, brand and voice.

  • Owned, authored, and edited the Editorial section.

  • Edited the rest of the book for consistency.

Impact

  • True understanding of where we were and where we were going.

  • Unified story and guidance that could be shared with partners and guest writers.
